Why it is so vital to our well being and our community 😉
Intro
Fishing is the most important hobby in the United States.
It is unique in our culture that an activity bridges all socioeconomic boundaries with inclusivity to all.
Whether rich or poor, male or female, educated or ignorant, country or rap… almost all Americans know fishing.
The Beauty of Fishing
The beauty of fishing is that it’s so many different things: the people you’re with, the places you’ll go, the awe of holding another living thing, the release, the meal we’ll cook, the boats, the bait, the flies.
But the doing of the thing is a certain kind of glue that maintains friendships, eases familial tensions, provides a legacy of traditions, opens minds, humbles experts, rewards beginners, and encourages innovation.
A Fishing Life on the Oregon Coast
I’m a charter captain and fishing guide operating in Newport and the surrounding waters in Oregon.
I fish for the love of the human experience, the mystery of the natural world, the honor of continuing my father’s work, and the pleasure of sharing the magic of fishing in Oregon with new friends.
Fishing Is for Everyone
Fishing is for everyone, and we live in the world’s greatest place to explore what fishing means to you. The diversity of opportunities is unrivaled. For example, in less than 30 minutes drive, I can share experiences such as:
River Adventures –Floating a wildly beautiful river, rowing a drift boat quietly among giant trees and under waterfalls, casting softly to familiar spots where a surprise might be waiting.
Bay Excursions – Trolling a local bay, the soft hum of the small motor complementing the subtle splash of the tide, as the rods rhythmically keep time until time stops, stands still, and then collapses with the strike of a salmon and all the ensuing chaos.
Offshore Journeys – Cruising comfortably across the slick Pacific Ocean with the confidence a seaworthy boat provides and the joy of an unscripted adventure.

Will the schools of fish suspended over the nearshore reefs stop us first? Or will the bunches of bait skitter across a wave, making us pause to drop gear for the salmon that are feeding beneath? Or will we continue west, passing the humpbacks and then discover water so blue that it feels Hawaiian?
More importantly, we’ve spotted the schools of tuna jumping high into the air!

The Perfect Ending
How long will we play offshore before we head back to check our crab traps for Dungeness that will be cooked and enjoyed by the fire later tonight?
Oh, the stories we will create and the years we will enjoy telling them!
